The mantis shimp. For a long time this amazing creature was simply considered as food, but as nature proves right before our eyes, these shrimp are fierce, voracious, and very hungry predators! p.s. the thumbnail image at the start of this video is just food for the mantis not seen here…
Captain Ken would like to wish you a bountiful 2011 full of sharp hooks, tight lines, and action-packed fishing!
On the first day of this year, and being in dire need to walk on true terra firma, since concrete and asphalt do not count… a little afternoon road trip out to Jamaica Bay was in order to see what off-road scenarios were possible around the Rockaways.
Happy New Years to All from Jamaica Bay NY!
As expected, the access road to Breezy Point was blocked by a size-able snow drift at the entrance just off the pavement, but not to be deterred, there were quite a few other places to check!
With a little bit of scouting we came across a good location to park and toss a fly line. This time of year there is nothing like throwing Rio’s 26ft density compensated sinking line from the shore.
After several stagnant weeks behind closed doors, it felt very good to stretch the line and play in the snow! This of course was merely an exercise to keep the dexterity flowing through the fly rod!
Check back soon as a new special offer will be announced for those who book for the spring 2011 saltwater fly fishing season in advance!
Armed with a super sweetWinstonand Nautilusfly-fishing combo, Captain Ken takes the bow for once and goes to town fly fishing in saltwater while striped bass and bluefish feed voraciously on these tiny peanut bunker! Other anglers on board threw conventional tackle and also did very well hauling in the fish!
Sweet Pea was hauled today, gear offloaded and rinsed down and is in the middle of the drying process before being put away for the next 5 months. And none too late for me to hop onto a jet and head back to Texas with a 7wt (floating and intermediate lines)!!!
…is the best thing to do for fun, and an even better way to stay warm in New York while giving you more breathing room than imaginable in such a densely populated area.
Thanks again to Dirk, Ryan, and Dave for making this trip one of the best of the year! It was awesome to see that with two fly rods and two spinning rigs in the water, we were certainly covering all bases, but it was the fly fishing techniques and tactics that got this fine striper.
Dirk played the fish expertly and even with super fast drift, due to the strong winds, the release of this “keeper” was more than surreal on such a cold and blustery day on the boat in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean.
a chilly day coming to a close
With all the fine fly fishing, food and camaraderie was just what the captain needed to breath easy in the Big Apple!
Thanks again to everyone aboard for a fantastic time, and for completing a milestone in the History of Jones World Sports Fishing!!!
Contact me directly to find out exactly what is this Milestone and also to get more info about the next special offer (a $75 value)!

Although many people have stowed their gear for the winter season, there remain a few die-hards, a.k.a. fishing maniacs, that are all too aware that the striped bass and tuna fishing has not quite ended!!!
Of course there are fewer days each week of good weather, but on the days that there are allows, we’ve been taking to the water bundled up in multiple layers of high-tec synthetics, and lots of wool clothing!
The ROD is NEVER too BIG
With the herring and mackerel hanging around our coastal waters, there are still plenty of ravenous stripers still here taking advantage of a hearty holiday meal! Wouldnt you?
So… Go get your thickest socks, and biggest boots all warmed up, and give Captain Ken a call to book one of the last fly fishing trips of 2010 fishing season along the North East Atlantic Coast!

As a very large mass of striped bass and bluefish continue along their westerly route towards NY Harbor, flies are still being tied to imitate the herring which have made their presence known this fall, as in recent years past they proved to be scarce…
The Fly Fishing action continues...
The striped bass of course knew about this resurgence of herring and began their feeding rituals without hesitation.
What this means for the hardy angler, is several more chances at large striped bass on the fly!
Poised and ready in waiting, Sweet Pea sits at the lonley dock where most boats have been hauled and wrapped for the winter. This is my favorite time of year, aside from early spring, when the numbers of boats dwindle, and the chances of big striped bass increase as the end of the 2010 season draws nigh.
Intermmediate fly lines have been replaced with Rio’s 26ft density compensated sink tip lines, which for all intents and purposes, work magic with dredging techniques, but last Sundays personal trip provied that these lines can be cast like missles from a rocket launcher, even with a 9-inch yak hair fly in tow!
While last weekend this eco-mass of fish were only a 30-mile run West, we were still able to pull some nice fish up to 15 lbs using long and sparsely tied clousers as the sand eels still have a strong prominence in the food chain this year.
Luckily, while waiting for the next fishing trip I took a few minutes to play around with a photo from Sunday and came up with this neon striped bass effect!
Shoot the Moon!!!
